“Guaraní, Chiriguano People, and the Poetics of Marginality in Barco Centenera”

This talk will analyze the subtle use of linguistic diversity in Martín del Barco Centenera’s epic poem La Argentina (Lisbon, 1602), which represents various groups of Guaraní-speaking peoples in the Gobernación del Río de la Plata, in particular the Chiriguano (Ava Guaraní). The use of Guaraní words allows Barco Centenera to develop a rather crude and satirical account of European settlers in the Americas, promoting what could be described as a poetics of marginality.
