Portuguese Placement Exam for Fall 2025

Next Online Placement Exam for the Fall 2025 Semester: 

  • Placement Exam: Monday, November 3, 2025 at 9 am
  • Placement Exam closes: Friday, November 7, 2025 at 1 pm NOTE: Please begin your test by 10:30 am to ensure you have enough time for a full testing session.
  • Placement results reported: Results returned via canvas.yale.edu, “Spanish Placement Test Site 25-26” Results will be provided by 5 pm on November 14.

The Yale Portuguese Placement Test will be administered online. This test is intended to determine a proper Portuguese level for you so that you will get the most out of your academic experience in one of our courses. Your test will be evaluated by our department and it is to be taken without any outside help or access to resources or materials. You are expected to provide short answers, multiple choice, and brief essays. Do not worry if you do not understand every word. Use the global information and the context to provide an answer. This test does not evaluate your potential knowledge, but rather it tries to determine your current level. Try to answer all questions with your best effort. 

All students, including native speakers, who have been exposed to Portuguese whether formally or informally, who wish to enroll in a Portuguese language course must take the placement test. 
 
DO NOT take the Portuguese Placement Test if you have never studied Portuguese. You may enroll in PORT 110 directly.
  
Once you have logged in through the placement test link (on the main CLS placement page), you will see links for both tests to choose from. BEFORE STARTING THE PORTUGUESE PLACEMENT TEST, please answer a survey on the Canvas site.

Results will be posted prior to the start of school on Canvas (within the “Portuguese Placement Test Site”; Canvas link is available at the bottom of this page).
