Sofía Fernández González

Sofía R. Fernández González is a doctoral candidate in the Spanish and Portuguese department at Yale. Her dissertation, Nature at the Forefront, examines the agency of glaciers, deserts, land, tubers, bodies of water, and other more-than-human entities, exploring their relations of radical reciprocity with theater and performance art works and their creators across the Americas. She also studies performance art/ performativity in rural and depopulated contexts in Galicia, Global South Feminism, Migration Studies, and Critical Thought. Fernández González’s articles have appeared or are forthcoming at Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies, Galiza21 and Clara Corbelhe, among others. She is the co-translator and editor of New Galician Plays (The Segal Center Publications, 2025), and the Galician translator of modernist poet Lola Ridge, and has published her criticism at The Brooklyn Rail and The Dance Enthusiast, and is a regular contributor of Praza Pública.

Fernández González’s research has been supported by the Fulbright Commission, The Women Faculty Forum, the Environmental Humanities Grant at Yale and the Xunta de Galicia, among others. As a literary writer, she has been awarded with the X Premio Illa Nova de Narrativa 2026 and the Terceiro Premio de Poesía Xuventude Crea 2024. For her open-facing scholarship, Yale granted her the Public Scholar Award in 2025. She is a volunteer with the Yale Prison Initiative and a Life Worth Living Fellow. She holds a M.A in Philosophy from University of Santiago de Compostela, and was an exchange student at Universidad de Guanajuato, México, in 2016. Prior to coming to Yale, Sofía worked as a dance educator, as well as an archivist at the Vicente Risco Cultural Foundation.
