1. Carnaval - We have come up with a shared event about “Carnaval Celebration” together with the other Portuguese FLTAs that currently teach at 3 other U.S. universities. We think it will be interesting because it will allow you to share and interact with a larger community of portuguese learners, listen to other accents and different cultural backgrounds of the FLTAs. It will happen on the 16th of February at 2 pm (EST). Those interested in participating can fill this form to receive the link: https://forms.gle/Lk7Zj84Wgm5uh32t7.
2. Public Health - During two different moments we will be talking about the Brazilian universal public health system (SUS) in terms of what it is, how it came to be, some challenges it faces and more. These events will happen on the 26th of February and on the 3rd of March.
3. Portuguese in the World - For these events we will be bringing the voices and works of portuguese-speaking authors that are not just from Brazil and Portugal but also from African Portuguese-speaking countries. The events will happen on the 18th and 26th** of March. (**UPDATE: This will take place on Thurs, March 25 at 4:00pm)
4. Pronunciation Workshop - We will offer a brief pronunciation workshop in which we will be discussing accent, intonation and other segments of the inventory of the portuguese language while also addressing their relationship with social and local conventions. It will happen on the 5th of April.
5. Afro-Brazilian Culture - These events will include a discussion on the documentary “Ôrí” by Raquel Gerber, a talk about “urban quilombos” with the guest speaker Luana Reis (from the University of Pittsburgh) and a third event deepening the topics addressed on the previous encounters, although they may not happen exactly in this order. The events will happen on the 14th, 22nd and 30th of April.
6. Language Tables - Finally, we will also offer a couple of more theme free Language Tables in between these events (and during exam season) so you can have a space to talk about what interests you and play a few games with us.
